Tolstoy-Bridge in the Death of Ivan Ilyich

                                         File:Visegrad Drina Bridge 1.jpg
A bridge is a structure built which connects two separated sides. It is also a name of Ivan Ilyich's favorite card game in the story.

Throughout the book, Ivan's favorite thing is not being with his family or friends. Instead, he spent his whole life climbing social ladders and strengthening his social relationship. Therefore, his entire life seems meaningless and tragic. However, when he plays the bridge game, he really has fun, and that is the only time for him to escape the boring and materialistic work. Thus, on one hand, the bridge is the connection between his two different ways of life.

On the other hand, the bridge is the transition between life and death. On the last moment of his life, he still remembers this card game, and the this game is the only interest he has. As well, he is gradually getting a true understanding of life as he is passing away. Therefore, He realizes the true essence of life as he is crossing a bridge of life and death.

The Death of Ivan Illyich

The tittle implies what happens to Ivan Illyich at the end of the story, therefore his death is not a big surprise to me for a novel in such a gloomy tone.

Ivan Illyich, is the protagonist of the novel. He is a nondescript, unexceptional man. He admires those with high social standing, and conforms his values and behavior to their rules. Therefore, according to his thought, the most interesting thing to him is not enjoying the time with his family, instead, getting a higher social position. So before his death, although he is definitely a winner who has a strong ability of formalizing human relationship, he is totally a loser in the family aspect. Meanwhile, the relationship between his wife is capricious. It is totally depending on the position and wage Ivan has in the government. With the higher position and wage, their relationship becomes pacific. However, when Ivan just goes a little bit down, he will be extremely mad and angry on his families.

Additionally, Ivan is fear of death. When his families and doctor tells him that there is no way to treat his disease, his mood gets worse and worse. It is so easy for him to be annoyed, and his life is totally ruined.

Ivan does not get the essence of a life until the last moment of his life. At the time he truly faces the death, he just notices that he has nothing happy to think of and how meaningless his previous life is. He becomes so remorseful because he actually could do much more. He could be a loving husband; he could be a amiable father; he could have more fun and less anger in his life. But it is too late.

He dies, in pain and regret.

Overcoat Short Story Part III

What a wonderful life John has. He went to the bar with his friends every day, and the dinners are usually on him. All his friends respect him so much. He is not the poor John any more, he is a rich and generous man.

"Fantastic night again, right?" John was drunk, said to his friends loudly.

"Of course. Thank you John, you are the best friends we have, you bring the happiness to us. No matter what happens, we will be always on your side." He so-called friends responded flatteringly.

"Oh, nice." He laughed," Hey how much totally? Here is the card." John showed his golden card as usual, looked at and asked the waiter scornfully. Yes, he is a rich man, being arrogant is the way he should act.

"Your card is invalid, sorry, sir, do you have other method to pay?" the waiter asked politely, he knew John is a rich man. Being polite and respectful to these guests is the way he should act.

"What? Say it again?" He could not believe it, "Try it again."

"It is invalid, I am pretty sure, sir." The waiter continued to act as politely as before. "Sir, do you have cash?"

Maybe the true owner of the card froze the card, maybe he spent all the money. No one knew. But what we knew was that all his so-called inseparable friends left him and  he used his nice clothes, expensive watch and the sliver ring replaced the cost on that night. Less and less people visited him, John become the poor John again.

(The End, Part 3)

Overcoat Short Story Part II

It was a cold winter day, the poor John could only wear a old and working suit against the freezing weather. That is his dream to have a warm and nice fur overcoat, but the cruel reality, poverty, totally ruined his dream. He squat down, sitting on the side of the busy road, looking at the colorful cars, feeling like the city prosperity had nothing to do with him. He moved his hands to the pants pocket to get a little bit warmth. Suddenly, he seemed to recall something. "Yes, the golden bank card, why wouldn't I try that? There is must be tons of money there!" He stand up, trying to find a clothes store, leaving all the hope on that shining card.

"I want overcoat, size 44," he stand by a clothes hanger, staring at these nice overcoats, and did not know which one choose to buy."How much is that," he can't move his eyes from a rabbit fur coat, that is the nicest coat he has ever seen.

"Oh, this one?" the waiter looked at him up and down. All he could see was a pair of broken boots, old working pants, and a out fashioned coat with some construction materials on that. "I do not think you can afford, this is the best clothing store in the city, only the VIPs come," the waiter said impatiently, looking at John disdainfully.

"I got a card, may I try it?" John showed his shiny golden bank card, and said confidently.

"Let me see," the waiter was just going to serve other guests, but he turned around and said curiously. "How could he have that?" The waiter was shocked after he saw that, and spoke softly to himself.

"Oh, yes you can, I don't know you are the bank's Golden VIP. Sorry, I thought...Just try the clothes on, I think it fits you very well. Look at the wonderful color and design. I can't believe, it is just made for you. It matches your handsome appearance." The waiter's face changed so quickly, and became so respectful to John.

"wow, that is such a useful card!" John took the overcoat and paid as he thought.

"See you next time" the waiter bowed to John as John left the store.

John bought all the things he wanted with the card. His social position rocketed up just in the following several day. Many his friends' friends came to visit and flatter at him after they knew John was such a rich people. John's life changed tremendously, just with the accident gain, the shiny golden bank card

Overcoat Short Story Part I

"Wow, what is that?" John, a tall, tan man in a sweaty uniform and work boots, screamed when he saw something shiny under the sun light. He walked there curiously, bent his back, and picked up the little flashing thing. "Oh my goodness," he was so surprised that his mouth even became a big "O." "That is a golden debit card, whose is this?" John whispered to himself while he still not believe what he saw was true. John looked around sneakingly, checking out if someone else saw this gorgeous free gift. "No one is around me," John said softly and a undetected smile appeared on his face. as he carefully putting the card into his old working pants pocket, with a secret plan starting in his brain.

John is a construction worker, who works until late at night to get a meager salary. The poor birth makes him grow up in a inferior family. He has no wife and child, since he can not even support himself well. He is just a marginalized poor man, wandering the unnoticed corners in the industrial city. His friends probably are similar to him, drinking and smoking are the most interesting things for them to do.

It was a common day, but John's life gradually changed with this small shiny golden band card...

The Narrative Style

D.S. Mirsky characterized Gogol's universe as "one of the most marvellous, unexpected — in the strictest sense, original — worlds ever created by an artist of words". From my personal perspective, this quotation exactly describes Gogol's wring style. In The Overcoat, you will never guess at the ending when you first time read the story. If I write the book, I will definitely stops at the death of Akaky. However, Gogol ends the story in a totally different way. He makes Akaky become the ghost, wandering around the city, and taking others's overcoats. This ending is more unexpected and meaningful than the usual one. The other main characteristic of Gogol's writing is his impressionist vision of reality and people. He always starts the story by describing the Russian normal life and depicting the characters in detail. Here is a short description of Akaky "not a very high one, it must be allowed -- short of stature, somewhat pock-marked, red-haired, and short-sighted, with a bald forehead, wrinkled cheeks, and a complexion of the kind known as sanguine." With some piece of short and strict phrases, Akaky shows the character vividly in front of you.

That's it :) Have a nice break, and happy Thanksgiving.

Grotesque in The Nose

From the dictionary, Grotesque means a very ugly or comically distorted figure, creature, or image. In The Nose, Gogol used this way to narrate that satirical story. It is crazy that the main character Kovalyov loses his nose, and the nose becomes a real person with higher social position and  wearing the nice uniform when Kovalyov sees it walking on the street. I found it ridiculous and weird when I first time read the story. Additionally, when Kovalyov asks the nose to reattach to his face, the nose even refuses him because of the high political level it has. To Kovalyov, the nose is more important than anything, since he feels depressed and could not face the whole world without the nose. In my opinion, the nose means more than just a nose. As my previous blog said, it could also be seen as a figure of vanity. I think that is what a nose really means, and that is why the story is so attractive to me although it is so crazy and weird.

The Nose

The Nose is a satirical short story written by Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, one of the most famous writer in Russia.  It tells of a St. Petersburg whose nose leaves his face and develops a life story of its own.

From my personal perspective, the nose in the story means more than just a nose. As we know, the nose will easily change the appearance of a person. It is obviously that people feel better with good looking. That is why the nose is so important to the Major Kovalyov especially after he loses it.Additionally, the nose represents the Kovalyov's vanity. After losing the nose, he feels self-esteem, timid, fearful and can not face the world. However, does he really could not survive without a nose? Gogol burst the illusion of people, make us see the most embarrassing naked soul, as if shocked exposure to stomach worms under the surgical lights. Must have such vanity officials aside Gogol. So that he just made a mischief, and let them know, all they pride is only a nose---a mask.

First Love: Vladimir and Zinaida's Characteristics

Vladimir Petrovich:

A 16 year-old boy, who falls in love with Zinaida, a 21-year old girl from a downfall noble family. Since he is so young, he actually knows nothing about love and he could not control his feeling to this beautiful and attractive girl Zinaida. He will be happy when Zinaida gives him a smile; he will be despondent when Zinaida flirts with other suitor. The pure and native Vladimir has his whole feeling of love totally controlled by Zinaida, and that is one of the reasons I consider that he does not get the real love from Zinaida.

Zinaida Alexandrovna Zasyekina:

She is another protagonist of the story, the object of Vladimir’s affections. She is capricious and inconsistent in her affections towards her suitors. However, she shows the most affection to Vladimir, but that is the affection of sister to brother rather than between lovers. At the end of the story, Zinaida finds out her true love, Vladimir’s father Pytor Petrovich. But this true love does not give the happiness and warmth she really wants, instead, it brings her with pain and crush her heart.

The Rejection Letter

PS: I am really glad to be a guy, since I could choose to write the rejection letter instead of a love letter that I have never been good at. J

It is definitely your right to choose me. So I felt lucky to be the one you love, and your letter moved me a lot. However, I can accept you. I am sorry. I have too much schoolwork to do, and I might have no time to be with you. Additionally, my parents want me to keep focus on the study since both of us are the seniors who are going to the college in the nearly future. I think it will be a good idea for us to work together rather than flirt with each other everyday. I wish I do not hurt you, and I hope we are still best friends.

Yours truly,
Andy

The Duel Part of Onegin

After Onegin flirted with Olga, Olga apparently attracted to Onegin. Due to his exaggerated earnestness and inexperience, Lensky is wounded to the core and issues a challenge to Onegin for a request of a duel. However Onegin does not want to have a duel with Lensky, since he is Onegin’s best friend, and there must be someone’s death. So he reluctantly accepts the duel. In the next day, Lensky waits with his assistant who counts the exactly third-two steps for the distance. It is Lensky’s first time to duel, and actually he has no experience about that. However, Onegin is expert at this cruel “game”. Therefore, neither of them shoots to the other one at the beginning, what they do is just walking closer towards each other.

In the movie, Lensky shoots first, but misses. Then Onegin holds down the gun then shoot Lensky in the head. Then Onegin steps up to Lensky, feeling so regretful. However, things are a little bit different in the novel. Actually Onegin shoot first and Lensky just falls down and lies on the ground, them the assistants take Lensky away as Onegin turns around and leaves.

After that, Onegin then quits his country estate, choosing travel as a means of deadening his feelings of remorse.

The Extremes in Tatiana's Letter

Tatyana’s letter to Onegin.

Another! No, no one on this earth

Is there to whom I’d give my heart!

That is ordained by highest fate…

That is heaven’s will- that I am yours;

My life till now was but a pledge,

Of meeting with, a forward image;

You were sent by heaven of that I’m sure

To the grave itself you are my savior…

In dreams you have appeared to me

Though yet unseen, I held you dear.

I see this part of is the most extreme part of the poem. Tatyana indicates that Onegin is the only one she would give her heart to, and even “that is ordained by highest fate” and “heaven’s will”. These words in the poem show Tatyana’s great passion of love to Onegin, and strong will to belong to Onegin. “You were sent by heaven” and “you are my savior”, these two pieces of poem absolutely show the image of Onegin in Tatyana’s eyes.

Usually, a girl will not say such extreme thing to the man she loves. Therefore, I consider it as the most extreme part of the poem.

Does art depict life or does life depict art?

In my personal perspective, the art depicts life.

The art is from the life, and what it does is to reflect the life in another way. Eugene Onegin, one of Pushkin’s most famous works, is really a good example of my point of view. In this novel, the main character Onegin shares a similar life with its author, Pushkin. Both of them are born in the upper-class family, grow up in the good circumstance, get well education. Both of them have grand dreams, want to change something, and world-weary. Additionally, the time cost for Pushkin was really long. He did not finish the whole story in several months, but seven years. He actually did not have a planned structure of the novel when he started. What he did was to publish the novel section by section, and see what would happen as he experienced more. Therefore, in these characters he created, we are able to see the reflection of him. Not only the people in literature get the inspiration from the life, many painters were strongly influenced by it as well. One typical example is Vincent Van Gogh, who is the most well known painter in 19th century. The topic in his paintings was really related to his personal experience. The Sunflowers, a series of paintings, reflected his glorification to love, his pursuit to the freedom, and his idiographic comprehension of life when he was so depressed about the life he had at that period.

General speaking, art usually depicts life since life is the best source for artisans to get inspiration.

Eugene Onegin Reading Log

We started to learn Onegin today. As I saw the website, I noticed that this story is really long and the translation from Russian to English seems so complicated. However, i heard about it before, and hopefully there is some chinese version to help me understand this great book.

  • Eugene Onegin is a novel in verse written by Alexander Pushkin published between 1825 and 1832.
  • It is a classic of Russian literature, and its eponymous protagonist has served as the model for superfluous men.
  • Almost the entire work is made up of 389 stanzas of iambic tetrameter with the unusual rhyme scheme "AbAbCCddEffEgg", where the uppercase letters represent feminine rhymeswhile the lowercase letters represent masculine rhymes. This form has come to be known as the "Onegin stanza" or the "Pushkin sonnet."

Four main characters:

Eugene Onegin: A dandy from Saint Petersburg, about twenty-six years old. He is good at socializing and educated. But he is also a arrogant, selfish and world-weary cynic.

Vladimir Lensky: A young poet, about eighteen years old. He is a very romantic and naive dreamer. He was killed by Onegin in a fight from Olga.

Tatyana Larina: She is a shy and quiet girl, but also the passionate landowner's daughter. She loves Onegin and writes letter to him. However, she get rejected at the beginning.

Olga Larina: A beautiful and romantic girl, but also a vapid coquette.

I think this novel is strongly related to the author himself, and I consider the Onegin as the reflection of Pushkin. Onegin is a guy from the Russian upper class, however although he is cultured and really good at socializing, he still has the common problem shared by most of the upper class people, arrogant and selfish. Also, both of Onegin and Pushkin are world-weary. They are tired of the life they had before, and try to change. Additionally, both of them are the loser in the love. Onegin finally could not be with Tatyana, the girl he truly loves, while Pushkin's marriage was the miserable.

Book 1:The first part of the novel mainly introduces the main character Eugene Onegin. Onegin is an educated man form St. Petersburg and very world-weary. He is really good at socializing and very popular among the upper class society. He lives in a luxurious way however, he gets bored with this country life.

Book 2: He meets Lensky, a young romantic poet engaged to Olga. Then the author introduces Olga’s sister, Tatiana. Tatiana is a shy, emotionless, beautiful and smart young woman.

Book 3: After Onegin meets Tatiana, Tatiana believes that she falls in love with Onegin. So she writes a letter to Onegin, and wishes him to answer that. However, things do not happen in the way she expects. Onegin does not reply anything, and Tatiana is so depressed.

Book 4: Onegin does not want to marriage and love right now, but he does love the way that Tatiana expresses her love. Also, the beauty and honesty attract him very much. However, Onegin does not think he is ready now, since in his opinion, the marriage is dreary and depressing and it absolutely does not fit the way he lives.

Book 5: Later Lensky invites Onegin to Tatiana’s name day celebration and try to make Onegin and Tatiana o be together. However, Onegin was late to the party, and even after he arrives there, he starts flirt with Lensky’s girl, Olga, Lensky is so mad that he has to use a duel to end this. So he decides to fight with Onegin. In the end, Onegin unwillingly kills Lensky who is his best friend.

Book 6: Onegin could not forget the death of Lensky even 16 years have been passed. By an accidental chance, Onegin meet Tatiana in a dance. He notices that Tatiana has become the wife of a duke.

Book 7; Onegin finally finds out that Onegin is the true love he has been looking for so long. Therefore, he falls in love with Tatiana like a child, and tries to get her favor. However, although Tatiana still loves Onegin, she could not betray her husband. So she chooses to reject Onegin and leaves away sadly.

Howl and Leaves of Grass

I am sorry to post this so late since I was working on my science presentation and paper these days.

Here is the question: Compare and contrast Howl and Leaves of Grass.

The idea is different:

Howl is considered to be one of the great works of the beat generation. It criticizes the people in that generation for their sexual, open and alcoholic life. In his opinion, America is falling apart.

For the Leaves of Grass, Whitman glorifies the energetic America which gradually became the best country in the world. Additionally, Leaves of Grass shows Whitman’s great love to his country. Thus, compared to the idea in the Howl, the idea here is more positive since it was really passive in Ginsberg’s work.

The format is similar:

In both of their works, the formats are pretty similar to each other. I guess the main reason for that is because Ginsberg sets Whitman’s format of writing poems as a model. They both start with a idea, and use some examples to prove that.

The Love Song of J. Alfred - T.S. Eliot

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a posem by T.S Eliot. It shows the two most important characteristics of Eliot’s early poetry. First, it is strongly influenced by the French Symbolists. Second, the use of fragmentation and juxtaposition.

This story happens at a unpleasant night. In the beginning, Eliot describes the scene around the street. “half-deserted” street, the yellow frog and smoke, makes it more uncomfortable and dirty. In the next half of the story, Prufrock wants to know a girl. However, he is hesitated since he does not look well. He does not know how to start the conversation. At the end, he chooses not to go, and the story ends in the sad mood.

I think this poem expresses Eliot’s sense of isolation and loneliness, and his inability to fit into a world that he perceives as hostile. He thinks, to be a creature like a crab which is protected by a thick outer armor and better still is better for him. So that, he does not have to truly interact with anyone or care about what they think of him, or he of them.

Project 7: My Hemingway Project

I am sorry for this empty projects, I did not mean to do this. Actually, I was going to put something here on Thursday, however, as you told us the people who had AP or SAT could have more time to do work, so I just left this blog here and reviewed for the test in the next few days. I am going to do the work in today's class, and during the study hall tonight. I will try to finish the paper as soon as possible.

I think the project is going well now, and I already had the basic idea of the paper. Therefore I do not think it will be hard for me to do the paper work. By the way, thank you for the extra time to review for the APs and SAT 2 tests, I think I did pretty well in those exams.

Again, I am really sorry for the empty blog here. Additionally, I will do another blog post tonight to show the process of my project paper.

Project 6: Outline Of My Hemingway Project.

I think I almost come up with the basic structure of my project.

I will briefly introduce Hemingway first, and bring out the idea of Hemingway’s work is related to his personal experience. I am going to talk about his previous work such as The sun also raises, Farewell arms and For whom the bell rings a little. In these works, I will state the transformation of Hemingway’s thought in different period.

However, the main body of my project will be focused on The old man and the sea, as it is the book which most influence to the contemporaries and the best novel that Hemingway had ever written. Additionally, this book also strongly connected to Hemingway’s life. It is not only a story of a fisherman, but also represents Hemingway’s thought after he experienced the time that society greatly changed.

I think that will be my structure of my essay.

Project 5: Relevant Research About Hemingway's Work In Different Time Period

Hemingway published The Sun Also Rises and Farewell Arms in 1929. At that time, his work shows the cruelness or the war, and describes that generation of teenagers who lost the direction. The war brings the huge negative impact to human, and that is the basic mood of Hemingway’s work during that period.

In 1940, Hemingway published For Whom The Bell Tolls, a novel based on the Spanish Civil War against the Fascism. In this novel, people who suffered from the wars tried to overcome the loneliness and sorrow, and shows the elevated spirit of devote themselves into the justice and freedom. I think this is the symbol of his mid writing career.

Finally in his later writing career, The Old Man and The Sea shows a positive spirit of “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”.

Therefore, the keynote of Hemingway’s work does not obtain the same but changes as he experiences more. From the negative side to the neutral then to the positive, Hemingway shows the unconquerable nature of human.

Project 4: The Research Of Background Information

It is really easy to understand that the good literary work always comes from the real life. The more the writers experience, the profounder the work will be. Therefore, just like what I mentioned in the last blog post, The Old Man and The Sea must me strongly related to Hemingway’s personal experience. However, what happened to Hemingway’s life? What made Hemingway write this famous story? These are the main questions I was working on during the class today.

First of all, by the information I searched today, i found that Hemingway wrote this story when he was 52 years old. At that time, he was living in the coast of Cuba, and he loved sea and fishing. He knew the life of fishermen very well, and I guess that is one of the reasons the story gets so vivid. However, I think, if Hemingway only wanted to describe a regular 3-days life of a fisherman, he certainly did not have to write down such a moving and tragic story, and absolutely he would not get the Nobel Prize in Literature at 1954. Thus, I think, the Hemingway’s location and his hobbies just provided him with the knowledge of this story. However, the real essence and idea in the story is from his own experience in the past 52 years. Therefore I consider that is the most important factor to make this story famous and let him be the owner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

In the following time, I did the research on his biography. Hemingway was born July,1899, the several years before the World War 1 happened. After graduated from the high school, Hemingway refused to continue to study in the college. Instead, he chose to work for the war in Europe. On May, 1918, he succeeded to be a worker in the American Red Cross Team, and Italy was the country he worked in. On July, the same year, he got really bad injury since he tried to save a Italian solider. For that injury, he did 13 operations, and lied in the hospital for more than 3 months. Some people might think Hemingway would give up serving for the war as his situation was so bad. But actually he did not stop, he even went to more countries to do the volunteer work.

Also, during the research, I found that Hemingway published this novel 12 years after the last one (For Whom the Bell Tolls). During this 12-years period, Hemingway did not publish any work. Some critics even affirmed that Hemingway could not create any more and was not be able to write anything new. In think, this experience is really similar to the old man in the novel. Santiago have not capture any fish for 84 days, and other fishermen just mock and make fun of him. So, Santiago goes to the sea on the 85th day, just like the author published this novel to prove him self.

I think that is what I did in the class and study hall. By the way, actually, Hemingway’s thought was keeping changing during this writing career, and the best way to reflect the changes , I think, is to find out the ideas of his work in different time period. For this reason, I am going to do some research on his previous work tomorrow.

Project 3: Analysis of The Old Man and The Sea

The old man and the sea written by Hemingway is one of his most famous novel in his career. By this novel, Hemingway establish his important position in the world literature history. Though online research during today’s class, I think I got the main idea this great novel.

The old man and the sea tells a story of a old fisherman, whose name is Santiago, has gone 84 days without catching any fish at all. However, he gets a big marlin fish on the 85th day. He spends two days and two nights trying to catching it, and finally straps the marlin and thinks about the high price the fish will bring him at the market. Unluckily, on the way to his home, many sharks are attracted to the trail of the blood left by the marlin in the water, eat the most parts of the marlin, and leave the huge skeleton of the marlin. The old man falls asleep as he gets to the shack and has a dream, a dream for forgetting the cruel reality.

First, from this story, I saw a brave old man who never gives up hope. He does not get anything in the first eighty-four days, and he still believes that he will have good luck in the eighty-fifth day. Thus, because he keeps trying and never abandons the hope, he finally gets the big marlin fish.

Additionally, although Santiago is so lucky that meets such a big marlin, the process of capturing the fish is really hard to imagine. Santiago spends two days and two nights fighting with that marlin. His hands, arms and back are injured by the rough rope, and he only drinks and eats little water and food during these two days. He never gives up catching the marlin, and he eventually wins the battle after the fish gets tired in the third day. In this part of the story, the old man shows us what a real man should be. I think the detailed description of fighting against the marlin fish just reflects how brave and firm the old man is. The author Hemingway seems to believe that there are only two options: defeat or endurance until destruction; Santiago clearly chooses the latter. That is why Santiago succeeds after a two-days fight.

In the last part, the marlin is eaten by many sharks, and Santiago gets nothing but the huge skeleton of the fish. Some people might consider Santiago is a loser here as he loses everything after a long battle. However, in my opinion, I do not agree with that. Although Santiago gets so exhausted, although he does not have a completed marlin fish, he has never been defeated. He tries and pursues for his dream at least. He is not afraid to challenge, and he never surrenders to the sharks. Just like what Beethoven said, “ I can be destroyed, but can not be conquered”. I think the old man just did what Beethoven said, and he is definitely a winner in idealism. No matter if he gains or loses, he should be respected by everyone.

I think Hemingway uses the different things in the novel to represent the different things in the real world. Apparently, the marlin fish is the dream to the person, the shark is the destiny that people have to undergo, the sea represents the human society, and the process of capturing the fish reflects the fights between people and adversities. Also, I think this story is related to Hemingway’s personal experience at that time period. As we know, Hemingway joined the World War 1, World War 2 and Spanish War, and people were still in the great fear. Therefore, the chaos and confusion of the society hurt Hemingway deeply, and I guess that is one of the reason why Santiago is so old, but still has hope in his blue eyes. Santiago may represent Hemingway himself.

I will find out more information in the next following days.

Project 2: Guiding Questions and Locating the Source

Today I mainly search the background information of Ernest Hemingway. As my guiding question is to find out the influence on Hemingway’s works by his personal experience, I consider the background information is really important to know. However, I have to say, this guiding question is just the elementary direction of my project, I might find something more interesting and change the idea in the following research.

Through today’s research, apparently, Hemingway’s personal experience is strongly related to his work. I also found something interesting which is that most of Hemingway’s work is based on the wars or revolutions during the period from mid-1920s to mid-1950s and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Additionally, he has a really distinctive writing style which is characterized by economy and understatement.

For his works, I am going to choose two or three as the examples to analyze. For now I am only sure The Old Man and The Sea is one out of three, and I still have not chosen the rest yet.

Today after school, I almost finished reading The Old Man and The Sea. However I do not think I get the idea of this novel. Thus, I will do some background research and try to understand it during the tomorrow’s class.

Everything is going well.

Macbeth Analysis

we finished Macbeth by reading the book online and the movie in the class. I think Macbeth is the most interesting character to me in the play, thus I want going to analyze Macbeth in this blog post.

A lot of people consider Macbeth is one of the most famous tragedies in Shakespeare’s work. However, I did not have a really sad feeling after I got the main idea of this play. At the beginning, Macbeth was a brave man, a hero fight for his king. But what factor leads to the death of Macbeth, what makes him keep doing the cruel things and could never come back?

In my view, first, it is because of his enormous ambition. It is absolutely right for a warrior to have ambition. It is definitely true that almost every great emperor in the history was ambitions. However, in this play Macbeth did not get what he wanted from his ambition. Why Macbeth has such a huge ambition? As we know, in the Act 1, Scene 1, Macbeth met the three witches on the way back to the country. The three witches predicted that Macbeth would be the Thane of Cawdor, and then the king of Scotland. Since the first prediction came true a little time after the three witches left, Macbeth paid attention to what they said and believed he would be the king later. The words witches told him became the catalyzer, activated the dark character deep in Macbeth’s heart, and made him get crazy to pursue the kingship. Therefore, he killed Duncan, although he knew Duncan was a good king.

Secondly, through the book, we can tell that Macbeth did not want to kill the king when his wife told him to do. Thus the instigation from his wife is also a main factor. I consider Macbeth had conscience when he and his wife started to plan to kill the king. As shown in the book, Macbeth was hesitated and scared. However, his wife said “To be the same in thine own act and valour, As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem, Letting 'I dare not' wait upon 'I would,' Like the poor cat i' the adage?”(Act 1, Scene5). I think these words that lady Macbeth said strongly influenced Macbeth behavior. It is a common sense that a man does not want to be looked down on by the other. Thus, lady Macbeth’s instigation increased Macbeth’s motivation of killing the king and get the kingship.

If we say Macbeth felt nervous or anxious of killing Duncan, his action of killing Banquo was cruel and without any guilty feeling. The reason why Macbeth killed Banquo was that he felt Bnaquo might be the future problem to him. He became so arrogant and ruthless after being the king. He trusted the witches too much, and that made a lot of nobles leave the country.

Although Macbeth is a tragedy, a lot of people think that the death of Macbeth is resulted by himself. This play not only presents the tragedy of Macbeth, but also the tragedy of that time.

That is my understand to Macbeth.

Project 1: The Reschedule For The Project

I got my schedule for project changed today. I was trying to work during the break, and finish the first two parts of the projects, which are finding the guiding questions and locating and evaluating the sources. However, the break seemed to be so attractive to me that I did not do the homework at all. My friends and I traveled around in South Carolina, went to the North Myrtle Beach, and shopped in several big malls. It was really a wonderful time.

Since I enjoyed such a nice break for about ten days, I have to reschedule everything for my project. I feel the time is really tight as I have to finish all the research parts in the half month. I am going to finish the first two parts in before Apr 18, start making the notes in the next week, and finish both outlines and draft in the next following week.

I think I can do the research part well. However, the first several days of May will be a difficult time for me. I have some AP tests and SAT 2 Tests at the beginning of May to parpare, and I need to finish the final paper at that time.

Thus, I am going to complete the research part as soon as I can, and start the writing part earlier to save the time for the tests.

Extra Credit: Analysis of Shakespeare Sonnet 18

William Shakespeare is the most famous English playwright and poet in Britain during the European Renaissance periods. Sonnet 18, often alternately titled Shall i compare thee to a summer’s day, is one of the best-known of 154 sonnets of his work.

SONNET 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee.

Just like what I said in the last blog, it is really difficult for a me to comprehend the main idea of Shakespeare’s work. However, in this poem, according to my understanding and the researches on the internet, I think Shakespeare wants to show the humanism thought, beauty and love.

In the first sentence of the poem, he indicates that poem happens in a summer. As we know, the summer in Britain is not as hot as in Rabun Gap. The summer in Britain is more likely to be a late spring here which is the time that everything is active and vital. This part suggests that the “thee” is in the best time of his life.

In the first six sentences, Shakespeare compared “thee” with “darling buds of May”, “ Summer”, and the “Eye of heaven shines”. In his view, “summer”, “bud” and “sun” are “too hot” or “too short”. Thus, he argues that “thee”, his beloved, is more attractive than anything else and certainly he thinks his beloved is better.

In ninth and tenth sentence, Shakespeare also says that “thee” “sometimes declines from fair and the changing of nature”. However, in his opinion, “thee”, his beloved, will not “fade in the eternal summer”, even the “Death” could not claim “thee” for his own. Therefore, his beloved will live on forever through the words of poem, and we could consider this poem as a glorify to the beauty.

This poem praises the love as well. In the poem, he says “Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade” . In my opinion it is more than the beauty, it is a power that is able to conquer anything. That is the love form the human heart. As long as human exist, the love will never disappear.

Additionally, hough the resource on the internet, most scholars now agree that the original subject of the poem, the beloved to whom the poet is writing, is a male, though the poem is commonly used to describe a woman.

The Tragedy of Macbeth

I read the scene 3 of the Tragedy of Macbeth during the Thursday's class. I have to say Shakespeare’s work is really difficult to understand. The old English usage and the vocabulary are so hard for me that I have to check the dictionary and discuss with my classmates for lots of times. However, I still finished reading the third scene in the first act and made some notes by the Diigo. I think I got the main idea of this part.

In this part, three witches are gathered waiting for Macbeth and disappear after telling Macbeth that he will be the Thane of Glamis, the Thane of Cawdor and the king. Macbeth and Bnaquo are both surprised that what the witches say is true when Ross and Angus come the tell Macbeth that he becomes the Thane of Cawdor. However, they are so confused and nervous with that as they are afraid that they would betray the king.

In my opinion, this part is just the beginning of the whole story. Macbeth’s thought is changed by the witches’ words. Although Macbeth is confused, however, I think, he would believe the witches and go for the king. As we know, the king is still alive now, he has to betray the king to be the sovereign. The pursuit for the higher authority has never stopped, and this desire caused a series tragedies. I guess, that is why people call this play a famous tragedy.

New Project of American Literature

We are starting a new project in the class. What we need to do is to go researching the author or movement about American literature on the Internet. The topic is not limited in a particular person or a specific movement, but anything about the American literature in the history.

We have not decided our topic yet. However, we are more interested in the literary movement than a specific person. As we searched on the Internet, we find some really good topics such as the Movement of Sentimentalism, or the movement of Southwestern Humor which David was interested in.

In my opinion, we should find a topic which is more related to ourselves, as it is easier for us to explain the impact to our daily life. Usually, the movements in the American literary history would bring a new thought to the people, or a new revolution in the literature. Thus, I think, writing a movement which changed our ideas or we have experienced is really a good thing to do.

We will talk more about the topic later during the class.

Diigo

I have to say Diigo is a really cool and helpful tool in our American literature Class. It allows the users to bookmark and tag the web-pages. The students in our class could get much easier to communicate to each other with the specific highlights or the sticky notes that the others made.

In the Tuesday’s class, we analyzed some parts of the story Black Elk Speaks through the Diigo. I felt it was clearer and simpler to get the idea of the article with the highlights that the students added. Additionally, we could add the notes while reading the story. We could mark anything important, anything we do not understand, or any vocabularies. Anyway, the Diigo is quite a good tool!

The Yellow Wallpaper

The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Actually I really did not understand this story during the class. The writing style and some vocabularies are really hard for me to catch up. However, after finishing reading the entire story and searching some other source on the internet, I finally comprehend the major idea of this story.

The Yellow Wallpaper is regarded as an important work of American feminist literature. It is a collection of first person journal entries written by a sick woman whose physician husband confined her in the upstairs room to cure her. The husband believes he did everything right, and never listens to the suggestion from his wife. The woman is treated as a child in the room and she could not do anything she wants. Thus, she even gets worse and worse, and starts to pay attention to the yellow wallpaper. Because of all the different factors, she finally gets crazy.

I think the yellow wallpaper represents the oppression on the women by the men in the male chauvinism society. As we know, in the 19th century, the position between women and men in the society is hugely different. The men usually earned money and supported the family, while the women could only do the housework or just be a mother. The woman in the story becomes crazy as she does not want to follow the rules.

Although I got the main idea of this story, I still have some questions.

1. I do not understand why the woman sees some women in the yellow wallpaper? Does it mean the women were oppressed in the society at that time?

2. I do not understand the ending. What will happen after the woman pulled off the poster?

Letter from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Letter from Birmingham Jail is an open letter written by Martin Luther King, an American civil rights leader. It is a planned non-violent protest conducted by the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference against racial segregation by Birmingham's city government and downtown retailers. The most famous statement in this letter is "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

1. King indicated he came here because injustice was there. He wanted to spread the justice just like the Apostle Paul spread the love. In his opinion, everywhere in the world should have the justice.

“Just as the prophets of the eighth century B.C. left their villages and carried their "thus saith the Lord" far beyond the boundaries of their home towns, and just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco Roman world, so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid.”

2. King indicated the four basic steps of the nonviolent campaign. The fourth step, direct action always after the a series plans. Thus, we could see how cogitative King is.

“In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist; negotiation; self purification; and direct action.”
3. King talked about the just and unjust law in this city. In his opinion, an unjust law is no law at all, and it is just a tool to torture the black people. He hoped that the black people could have the same rights in the society.

“A just law is a man made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law….Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust.”

4. King also discussed about the extremist. He was not disappointed about being a extremist, but what he cared was what a extremist they would like to be. He did not want people to be the extremist serving animosity but love.

Was not Jesus an extremist for love: "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." Was not Amos an extremist for justice: "Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever flowing stream." Was not Paul an extremist for the Christian gospel: "I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus." Was not Martin Luther an extremist: "Here I stand; I cannot do otherwise, so help me God."

The Lesson of the Hour by Frederick Douglas

Frederick Douglas was an American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. He educated himself to read and write, and became a famous speaker for the black people.

In the Lesson of the Hour, Frederick Douglas criticized the treatment to the black people at that time. He especially focused on the lynching to the “Negros” which was really common in the south of America. He pointed that the reason why it happened was because of the big population of “Negros” who came from Africa. In the speech he indicated that the government should have take action for the equality and freedom of the black people.

In my opinion, Douglas wanted the black people to take part in the politics through his speech. Compared to Booker T Washington whose aim was to get the support from the white people to provide the vocational education and workplace but not to join the politics, Douglas’s thought was more progressive and important for the black to get the equal rights.

Although I could not fully understand what he said in the speech since my English is my second language, I tried to follow and I felt the passion and strong desire of freedom of an abolitionist leader. I think I could comprehend more if I have the text version.

"Atlanta Compromise" by Booker T. Washington

Altalnta Compromise is written by Booker T. Washington. Booker T. Washington was an American educator, author, orator and political leader. His father was a white slave owner, his mother was a balck slave. Although he was born at a black woman family, he was still the dominant figure in the African American community in the United States from 1890 to 1915. His famous work is Up from slavery which is a biography of himself.

Basically, in the speech of Atlanta Compromise, he wanted to get the support of the white race in order to have vocational education for the balck people. With the education, the black people could learn the simple techniques to do basic things. Thus, they could be able to survive in the society. At the same time, he also wanted the white people to provide the opportunities for the balck people in the work place. He wished all the people could be equal to each other, and it would be much easier for the black to earn the money. However, he thought the balck people should not ask to be put into the potical world.

It is absolutely correct to change the situation of the balck slave in the society at that time. Their social position must be improved immediately. They should be treated as the white people, and have the equal rights before the law. However, in my opinion, they must have the chance to take part into the political world. As we know, the leader of the politics could easily change the policy in the society. If the black people did not join the politics, they would have no chance to improve their position effectively. They must need the help from the politians, otherwise, they would still be in the bottom of the social class. Therfore, it is essential for the black people to have the exactly same rights as the white people do, and then, they could achieve the final success.

Naturalism Project 2

Our group did the presentation today. I was very nervous before since it was my first time to have a presentation in the English class. Anyway, I think we did a good job in the class and define the naturalism clearly by the previous effort.

It is really a good topic for us to discuss about the naturalism in different aspects, such as art, science or literature. We discussed the different naturalist views of the four writers. It was so interesting that although the four writers lived in the same time period (19th century), they have different opinion of naturalism. The writer I was working on was Frank Norris. He was deeply influenced by Emile Zola who is considered as the father of naturalism. In his book “McTeague” which I mainly talked today, I think he indicated the two points in his view of naturalism. The first one is people could not control the hereditary factors by themselves; the other one is the nature has a dramatic impact on people. When I concluded these two naturalist opinions, I really agreed with Frank Norris. A person was born in nature, grew in nature, and died in nature. In the other words, the circumstance will determine thought of human. I know it is hard to explain well, but I think I got the concept of his naturalist idea.

Naturalism Project 1

I am sorry that I forgot to post blogs every day. However, I was working on the presentation during these days.

Our group includes three smart and beautiful girls and one stupid guy. We are going to talk about the naturalism by analyzing the works of four different naturalist writers in 19th century. We will use the Google Doc power point to help us show the four writers’ opinions of naturalism to the class.

The writer I am working on is Frank Norris which is considered as the most important naturalist writer in American history. During the presentation, I am going to introduce his background. Also, I will talk about his views to Realism, Romanticism and Naturalism, which are strongly related to each other. Then, mainly, I will discuss about his most famous book “McTeague” which I read before, and pick some quotations in the beginning, middle, and end of the book to demonstrate his naturalist views.

Hopefully, we could do a good job in on Thursday.

Realism and Naturalism An Episode of War

We discussed about the Realism and Naturalism during the class. I did not post this, because I still need some time to understand the story, and the Realism and Naturalism.

Naturalism started around 1890 and remains huge in American literature for the next twenty years. Naturalism is an outgrowth of realism. Like realism, it wants to present an almost photographically accurate version of “real” life.

Realism is a literary style originated from the journalism. It tried hard to present the world as it really is. The realists usually use the simple things draw from everyday life to fill their work.

The article “Episode of War”, written by Stephen Crane is a good example of Realism and Naturalism. This short story describes the beliefs and settings in which people seem to be helpless. Through the story, the author indicates that people’s situation is depended on their personal decisions or environment.

The story mainly has three part, Lieutenant got a gunshot, the way to the hospital, and the amputation of his arm.

At the first part of the story, the Lieutenant got a gunshot on his arm.I consider it as a expression of Naturalism since he could not do anything to stop that and he was affected only by the environment.

The Realism is apparent during the second part of the story. On the way to the hospital, the author describes what he saw. Although the Lieutenant could have a higher position, he still had to experience the pain from the wound.

Also, at the end of the story, the choice of the Lieutenant is a truly example of Realism. He could choose if he listen to the doctor or not. However, he did not have a chance, and that resulted in the amputation of his arm.

In my opinion. the naturalism is more related to environment while the realism is related to other people. Because I think the naturalists consider the whole thing, the whole nature, affect more than the single one individual (realism).

Daisy Miller

We talked about Daisy Miller in the class, and here are the two questions we need to answer during the weekend.

1. Describe Daisy Miller.

Daisy Miller is a young and wealthy girl from New York, America. She travels around Europe with her mother and her young brother. In this book, she shows some really interesting traits. On one hand, she is active, independent, and not shy or timid to speak to strangers. On the other hand, she does not have any talent in social conversation. She is shallow and ignorant. She likes to attract others’ attention, and she is tiresome sometimes and. Her characters make her an atypical person, and it is difficult for her to fit the society at that time. However, in my opinion, she might just be a normal person at present, and more easily to fit into the modern society.

2. Why is Daisy Miller looked down on by the European family?

The Winterbourne family is the typical upper class family in Europe. I believe they really care about the behavior of a woman. In their opinion, a good woman should be polite, decorous and have social grace or conversational talent. However, Daisy Miller is definitely not a good example. She is shallow and ignorant. She even thinks Winterbourne might know an Englishwoman she met on the train because they both live in Europe. Additional, the cultural difference between the Miller’s family and Winterbourne’s family is huge. Although they both rich and share some similarities, the enormous distinction still make them disapprove to each other. Therefore, the cultural background, the behavior and the thought of Daisy Miller are the major reasons that why European family look down on her.

"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge"

"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is a short story by Ambrose Bierce. It talks about a confederate sympathizer called Peyton Fahrquhar who was condemned to death by hanging upon the owl creek bridge. However, in his dream he jumped from the broken board into the river, escaped from the several soldiers, and finally met his family and plantation. But all of that sudden, he died. He had never escaped, and he just imaged this occurrence. When I saw the movie in the class, although I knew it was his dream, it was so vivid that I could not believe this. Also, the ending was really horrifying. As we enjoyed the happiness of the new life and the reunion of him and his family, he just died at the moment when his wife held his neck in his beautiful dream.

Though the book, I was surprised at the impressive language on the description of the view. I think we could perceive the mood of a person though the view. In the book, the author described a wonderful scene after Fahrquhar got away from the soldiers with guns or even cannon. I believe in Fahrquhar’s dream, he was quite pleased. However, at the beginning of the story, when Fahrquhar was imposed to get on the bridge, the whole frame was dark, and the mood of Fahrquhar was depressive.

Last thing I want to mention is that no matter how bad people are, they still have something worth pursuing. In the book, even though Fahrquhar was a supporter of the south confederate, the planter and slave owner who should be eliminated, he still had a wife or children that he loved. Though the dream, we could notice that he had a strong desire of freedom.

"To the Person Sitting in Darkness" and "The War Prayer" discussion

"To the Person Sitting in Darkness" is an essay written by American humorist Mark Twain. He was an outspoken critic of American involvement in the Philippines and China, the foremost anti-imperialist literary figure, and the vice president of Anti-imperialism League of New York.

In this article, he taunted the people whom he considers to be immoral. In his opinion, the extension of the blessing of civilization was just a pretext for making money. The more industrialized nations actually did not bring the real civilization to the behindhand people, but the misery instead.

“The war prayer” is also an article written by this great author and humorist. It is a scathing indictment of the war by describing the scene at a church in an unnamed city before the war. It particularly satirized the blind patriotic and religious fervor as motivations for war.

At the end of the story is pessimistic. Because of the second part of the prayer for victory, the prayer for the suffering and destruction of their enemies, the God’s messenger (Aged stranger) was ignored. As we know, the coin always has two sides, so does the war. People in that time period were crazy, and pretty motivated by the fervor of patriotism and religion. They only cared about the victory of their own country, but not the happiness or the destruction of the enemies’ country.

In my opinion, I believe keeping the universal peace is absolutely the willing for all the people around the world, and opposing against the imperialism is a significant process in humanity. I really want to live in a world without war, terror, discrimination, poverty, etc…..

Emily Dickinson

Wild Nights! Wild Nights!
Were I with thee,
Wild Nights should be
Our luxury!

Futile the winds
To a heart in port, --
Done with the compass,
Done with the chart!

Rowing in Eden!
Ah! the sea!
Might I but moor
To-night in Thee!

I am going to talk about the poem “Wild Nights, Wild Nights” by Emily Dickinson. Actually I did not get the real idea in the class. But after I read several times and combined it with her thought, life, and experience, the inner connotation became clearly.

We all know that Dickinson neither got married nor had any children during her whole life, even she stayed in her parents’ house for most of the time. However, she would not be a lonely poet without any passion. Therefore, the “Wild Nights” here can be interpreted as “passion”, “love” or the “desire of the sexual life”. “Our luxury” in the first stanza seems to refer to the emotion between the two lovers. Although this poem contains no narrative plot, it still showed Dickinson’s strong yearning for reunion with a lover.

Love was one of the most important themes of Dickinson’s work. Another theme of her poems was death. She wrote about 1700 poems during her whole life, and one thirds of them are related to the death. Her view of death was quite different and with more deeply implications compared to others. She believed that the death was the beginning of life, and life was endless to her. Also, it was this thought that reflected her as a Transcendentalist.

Rappaccini's Daughter Class Discussion

By the reading and discussion of Rappaccini’s Daughter in today’s class, I noticed that the scientist, Rappaccini, is so cold and scientific that he even uses his daughter for the experiment. Since Rappaccini is an enlightenment man in the book, Hawthorne expressed her view of enlightenment though this character. The writer of the book, Hawthorne, is a Transcendentalist, which the most important thing to him is heart. Form the book, apparently, Hawthorne did not agree with the pure enlightenment thinking, which lost sanctity of the human heart.

Background of the book:

The book was written in mid 19th century, which the industrialization took place. Most of the people enjoyed the benefit from the development of science and technology, but there were still some people suffering from the environmental pollution or the working pressure brought by the revolution.

In my opinion, Rappaccini is actually not a bad guy. However, he is just too scientific in his nature. Some people thought the main theme is Corruption as Hawthorne contrasts the different corruption to make clear this truth: that the more heinous form of corruption is the first kind, which lodges in the human heart and intellect. But though my point of view, the main theme is love. Although Rappaccini corrupts the body of Beatrice, her soul remains pristine. She even treats the highly poisonous plants nicely. She falls in love with Giovanni, a college student. Thus it is the genuine love that sets no conditions or makes no demands.

Class discussion on thesis statement

We talked about the thesis statement in the class.

The thesis statement states the thesis or argument of an essay. It is usually at the end of the first paragraph and not more than one or two sentences. The thesis statement always reflects the topic of the essay, and tells the readers what the author wants to prove in the following paragraphs.

My thesis statement is "These three literary pioneers, Winthrop, Jefferson, and Emerson, defined the transformation of American identity during this 200 year period." I think it reflects the main idea of my essay---the definition of American, and how it transferred in time periods. Additionally, I emphasized the names of three main writers instead of "they".

Class Discussion on Chapter 13

In today’s class, we discussed about Hester current situation.

First, Hester observes that Mr. Dimmesdale’s condition is getting worse every day and his nerve seemed absolutely destroyed. And she believes that there is terrible machinery interfering him all the time.

Second, people greatly changed their views to Hester. It has been seven year since Hester stood on the pedestal as a sinner. She makes money by herself, gives out food or clothes to the poor people, and brings warmth to the distressed family. She is so merciful and helpful that she gets the respect and love from the whole community. Additionally, many people do not consider her scarlet “A” as “Adultery” any more, but “Able.”

The last several paragraphs are a little bit complicated for me. I could not totally get the idea of them but I think it is a transfer paragraph and talks about herself and her child. I hope I can understand more in the further readings.

The work I did in class on Chapter 5

Jenny is my partner on the poster in Chapter 5. We summarized the chapter, and wrote it down on the top of the poster.

In chapter 5, Hester at her needle, tells us about the life of Hester, and the cloudy reason that why Hester chooses to stay. She wants to accept the punishment, and does not want to live away from her lover. Although Hester is still considered as a sinner, she treats others quite nicely.

Additionally, we draw a picture of Hester doing her needle work while her child, Pearl, is looking at her. I think it is really difficult to explain the whole thing well with a picture, so we followed just like what the topic says, Hester at her needle work.

I think Hester is a beautiful and kind women.

Beautiful:

In chapter 2, the author describes Hester when she just came out from the prison.

“The young woman was tall, with a figure of perfect elegance, on a large scale. She had dark and abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam, and a face which, besides being beautiful from regularity of feature and richness of complexion, had the impressiveness belonging to a marked brow and deep black eyes. She was lady-like, too, after the manner of the feminine gentility of those days; characterized by a certain state and dignity, rather than by the delicate, evanescent, and indescribable grace, which is now recognized as its indication.”

Kind:

As a mother, Hester protects her child, Pearl, all the time.
In the market-place (chapter2)
In the prison (chapter 4)
